POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Corporate Services is currently searching for an Assistant Controller to work at our Shepard office location (9423 Shepard Road SE. Calgary, Alberta T2C 4R6).  The Assistant Controller is a key leadership role within the accounting department, supporting the daily operations, financial reporting, and strategic planning processes for the Startec Group of Companies. This position ensure accuracy and timeliness of financial data while driving process improvements and maintaining a strong internal control environment. The Assistant Controller will play a vital role in managing accounting functions, preparing financial statements, and supporting budget and forecasting activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

Financial Reporting & Analysis (Weighting 40%)

  • Prepare and ensure the timely completion of month-end close journal entries for the Startec Group of Companies
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reporting packages
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of accounts to maintain accuracy and compliance
  • Perform cost analysis of operational results compared to budgets and forecasts, identifying key variances and insights
  • Provide monthly cost accounting analysis and reporting on projects and jobs
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly KPI and incentive reporting for the group
  • Prepare ad hoc reports, financial reviews, and special projects as required

Daily Operations Management (Weighting 40%)

  • Oversee and support the day-to-day operations of the accounting team to ensure efficiency and accuracy
  • Review the work of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, ensure invoice coding, billing accuracy, and cheque runs are completed correctly
  • Support the preparation of monthly reforecasts and the annual budget packages
  • Assist with cash management activities, including completing bank reconciliations when required.
  • Act as a back-up to the Controller during vacations or absences
  • Participate in or lead financial accounting projects, ensuring deliverables meet requirements and deadlines
  • Collaborate with internal teams to enhance reporting systems and processes
  • Work closely with unit managers to align financial insights with operational needs. Support other department by providing financial guidance and insights

Process Improvement & Internal Controls (Weighting 20%)

  • Investigate improvement opportunities with unit managers to drive operational efficiencies and implement best practices
  • Assess and enhance business processes, identifying areas for optimization
  • Maintain a strong internal control environment and actively participate in implementing improved controls while optimizing workflows
  • Establish and maintain accounting principles, practices, and procedures in alignment with organizational goals

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation (or working toward completion) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, policies, and ASPE compliance.
  • Experience with financial reporting, tax filings, and preparing year-end statements.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel (Advanced level).
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to solve complex financial issues.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and communicate financial data to leadership.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor accounting staff.
  • Knowledge of Canadian GST regulations and payroll procedures.
  • Experience managing cash flow and working capital reporting.
  • Ability to recommend improvements for financial processes and reporting.
